The Blockbuster Report
We’re really getting down to the end of the calendar year, which means we have some good, quality films headed our way. This weekend we have five films that lead the charge. Anchorman 2 (wide release) and Her (limited) both opened on Wednesday, and while Will Ferrell’s new film is getting most of the buzz now, its Her, directed by Spike Jonze, that is worth the watch. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, Her tells the story of a man who falls in love with an advanced operating system specifically tailored to fit his personality. Sound bizarre? Well it is, but also intriguing.
Opening today in wide release are American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks (both Oscar hopefuls), and Walking with Dinosaurs. Sidenote: Walking With Dinosaurs will be a huge flop due to horrible marketing. American Hustle is based on the true story of the FBIs ABSCAM operation, trying to unearth dirty politicians, while Saving Mr. Banks is the untold story behind the production of Disney’s Mary Poppins. Completely different films, but both look amazing. We could be looking at three Best Picture nominees here in American Hustle, Saving Mr. Banks, and Her. Pick one and see it, or see all three.
