The Blockbuster Report

Well, this is it. The weekend I’ve been waiting for all year. The new Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and company film The World’s End is coming out this weekend, and I can’t wait to see it.  It is getting some great reviews so far, and the trailer looks hilarious, so here’s hoping. Naturally, it is my Film to See this weekend.

THE-WORLDS-END

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bone is also out this weekend. Two problems. One of the taglines on a poster reads “You Have Been Chosen.” I really can’t take a poster like that seriously, plus it makes me think of Toy Story. Also, on the TV trailers, they have been leading with a quote that basically says “This film is better than The Hunger Games.” Um, what? Since when is mentioning other films a good idea when marketing. This doesn’t look like it will be that good.

Other wide release films include The Frozen Ground, starring Nicolas Cage AND 50 Cent (I know right?!?). Actually this one may be decent.  In limited release we have the horror flick You’re Next, which looks really creepy, Drinking Buddies, which may or may not fool some people into thinking they are going to see The World’s End, and Short Term 12, which is getting some sensational reviews. The highly anticipated Kung Fu film The Grandmaster is out in limited release as well.

Where Do They Come From?

The World’s End is original from Wright and Pegg, Mortal Instruments is based on Cassandra Clare’s novel “City of Bones,” and The Frozen Ground is written and directed by Scott Walker (no, not the governor).
