The Blockbuster Report
So not only does Matt Damon roll out another good turn in a solid action film, Elysium should clean up at the box office thanks to lack of quality competition. Elysium is the latest production from Neill Blomkamp (District 9) that was featured on my films to see list for this year, so naturally I’ll stick with that as my Film to Catch of the weekend. Also of interest is the limited release The Good Son: The Life of Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, the true story of one of the more controversial boxers of recent memory. He was immortalized in song by the late, great, Warren Zevon, seen below.
Other wide release films include the animated spin-off Planes, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, and We’re the Millers. In limited release, we have I Give it a Year, Blood (starring Mark Strong and Paul Bettany), and the horror flick Jug Face. Ones to pay more attention to would be Prince Avalanche, and In a World.
Where Do They Come From?
Elysium was written by Blomkamp, Planes, although it is a spin-off, still qualifies as an original, as it isn’t a direct sequel. We’re the Millers is also an original, and the new Percy Jackson film, while a sequel, is still a direct adaptation of the novel.
