This Weekend in Cinema – 8/2/2013 – Smurfs 2 Guns

The Blockbuster Report

Well, we’ve got another perfect weekend to catch up on films you may have missed, as it looks like wide releases have nothing much to offer. We’ve got Smurfs 2, and 2 Guns in wide release. The most recent Smurfs installment looks about as uninspired as the first one, and 2 Guns is just a generic action film, although Wahlburg and Denzel are solidly convincing.

The best bet this week is on the limited release front. The ridiculous Cockneys vs. Zombies is worth a look based on absurdity alone, the African cycling documentary Rising From Ashes looks good, The Spectacular Now and Drift, starring Sam Worthington, come out this weekend, as well as Europa Report, a sci-fi film “documenting” a journey to Jupiter’s moon in search of alien life that takes home my Film to Catch pick of the week.

Where Do They Come From?

Obviously Smurfs 2 is a sequel. 2 Guns is an adaptation of a comic book series written by Steven Grant. Fun point: Grant is also the author of a few Hardy Boys books, as well as runs on several Marvel titles, including The Avengers, Punisher, the Incredible Hulk, and What If?
